Supplements for Dogs – Does your dog need them in their diet?

We see vitamins and supplements everywhere nowadays. They are in every health shop and supermarket and I bet many of you take some form of supplement on a regular basis - but does that mean we should be adding supplements to our dog’s daily ration?

Providing your pup with vitamins, minerals and other nutritional components is important to their health and well-being and most of these do come from their food as long as they are fed a balanced and nutritionally complete diet.  We all want to make sure our dogs stay happy and healthy and caring for their welfare is of utmost importance and so supplementing their diet makes sense if they are in need.

Will my dog benefit from supplements?

Just like people, different dogs will have different supplement needs. Age, breed, lifestyle, overall health and existing medical conditions all play a part in determining what supplements might help your dog. For example, dogs with joint pain and arthritis, allergies or skin problems such as itchy skin can benefit – in a nutshell, a chronic condition can benefit from a supplement.

A malfunctioning immune system in dogs can open the door to a whole host of diseases – diabetes, osteoarthritis and infection to name a few. If the immune system is compromised, your pup becomes increasingly vulnerable to illness. Keeping your dog fit and active is a good way to promote overall well-being but you may also want to consider boosting your dog’s immune system. Using a supplement such as our Healthy Hounds Immunity Support Powder is a great choice. This is perfect for dogs who might not be feeling their normal healthy self or who just need a bit of extra help if they suffer with low immunity or intolerances. Fish oil like our Salmon Oil for Dogs is also another fab supplement to aid the immune system. It can also help to improve joint mobility, combat itchy skin and support cognitive function.

If you find your dog suffers with itchy skin or fleas, you could try using our natural Flea, Tick and Mite Repellent, a supplement aimed at building up a level of deterrent in their bodies which will secrete through the skin keeping those pesky nuisances at bay. This supplement can also aid any itching or coat problems that could occur as a result.

If you have a dog who doesn’t seem to be quite as sharp mentally as they once were or seem a bit stiff walking around, why not try our Golden Aid Dog Supplement. This blend is specifically there to provide a helping hand for joints, bones, system, skin and coat and hopefully giving them a little bit of a spring back in their step.

Generally a high quality, complete and balanced diet should give your pup the much needed essential nutrients to maintain optimal health. However, as we’ve discussed, it is not “one size fits all” and supplements can help address specific medical concerns / issues and can improve the health of your dog. It is always best to discuss any medical concerns with your vet first.
