The Benefits of Turmeric for Dog’s Joint Health

Turmeric (pronounced tur-mer-ic) is an Indian spice and medicinal herb that has been used for many years. It is known as a ‘healing powder’ and the ‘curcuminoids’ (active ingredient) that are present in turmeric are responsible for its bright orange-yellow colour and its remedial properties. 

Turmeric has many health benefits for your dog (and also humans) and can be used to prevent, and treat, many ailments.

• It has an anti-inflammatory effect and can help with mobility and arthritic joints, easing pain and inflammation that may cause your dog to stiffen up 
• It has multiple digestive benefits as it can help your dog to break down food by stimulating the production of more bile in the liver. This aids in the digestion of fats, which are a major part of a healthy dog's diet, so your dog may feel more comfortable after eating.
• It complements non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) that may have been prescribed by your vet
• It can help to decrease blood clots in the heart, making it a helpful supplement in your dog’s diet for a healthier cardiovascular system 

Turmeric can easily be given to your dogs in many ways. It can also be added to your dog’s food in the form of a paste, drops or powder such as our Golden Aid supplement powder which is a simple way of adding it to your dog’s food. 

From a personal and anecdotal point of view, Dolly had a luxating patella as a puppy (she is now almost 6 years old) and this particular joint still gives her some issues from time to time.  If I notice the joint has stiffened and she has a slight limp, I add some Golden Aid to her food and within a day or so the limping stops – it definitely works for her!
