Can I give my dog eggs?

Eggs are a nutritional source of food for both humans and dogs to enjoy as part of a balanced diet. They provide some great added benefits to your dog’s health and can be a tasty treat for extra goodness. When you buy eggs for your dog, it is always best to buy from a trusted source and free range will always be the healthier option.

Choose from hen, duck and quail eggs which are usually readily available in local farm shops and grocers.

Eggs can provide some great benefits to your dog’s health like:

  • Lots of protein
  • Vitamin A
  • Fatty Acids
  • Iron

How do I start giving my dog eggs?

Whenever you give your dog eggs, they should always be plain with no added flavours, spices, or salt. This will ensure that nothing is going to upset your pooch’s system, so they can enjoy eggs in the best possible way.

You can feed eggs raw (Reggie & Dolly love eating theirs in the garden, I just pierce them to get them started – it’s also a great form of enrichment as they have to work out how to get into the egg), cooked and scrambled (make sure they are cooled before giving them)!

The best part is that your dog can even eat the eggshell, which provides them with a source of calcium, so no more having to waste it!  Personally I only let mine eat the shell if they are free-range.

How often can I feed my dog eggs?

We would recommend giving eggs to your dogs a couple of times a week, although it is not essential. If you feed a good quality and balanced diet, they will be getting all the nutritional goodness they need.  Eggs are just an added extra of tasty and beneficial food.
