How do I stop my puppy from biting us? Teething tips.
Is your new puppy getting into lots of mischief and trying to bite anything they can get their little gnashers on? Should you be deterring this behaviour and is it normal? Read on for our advice when dealing with your little one.
Why do puppies bite?
It is completely normal for puppies to use their teeth when exploring and playing, so expect them to nibble and bite at your fingers when they are young. When they are in the litter with their siblings, puppies will be using their mouths to play. Typically, this behaviour will continue when they interact with humans.
Puppy teething
Puppies go through an uncomfortable teething process that lasts approximately 2-3 months. During this time, you will no doubt see an increase in chewing on objects – or on you! Your puppy’s gums will be sore as they start to lose their baby teeth and their adult ones come in. Make sure during this time that your pup has plenty of teething toys to chomp down on.
Tips for puppy biting
Redirect play biting safely by guiding them to a toy or a chew to play with. If you start squealing when they bite, this will only excite and encourage their behaviour – they will think it’s all part of the game. Try our Puppy Treats Chew Pack. Suitable for pups aged 2-12 months, this specially selected pack is full of delicious, healthy treats which will be easy on the teeth and tummy.
Take away temptations! Fluffy slippers, laces and loose clothing are just some of the everyday items which will be irresistible to puppies. Until they have curbed their enthusiasm to tug at anything that dangles, it might be best to try and remove them temporarily.
Remember puppies are like babies and they will need lot of sleep. If they are overtired, your irritable pup may play bite. Schedule nap times if needed to encourage them to switch off.
We can all get a little grumpy when hungry and your pup is no different. They have tiny tummies and need several meals a day to keep hunger at bay. Again, a hungry pup may be irritable and again could be prone to biting.
Has your puppy enough stimulation? Bored behaviour can result in increased biting. Make sure they have ample opportunity to play. An under-stimulated pup can be a mischievous pup!
Try our Yak Attack Bars and Split Deer Antlers to calm your pup and their need to bite. Chewing releases endorphins which relax and calm your puppy. Both satisfy the need to chew and bite without compromising your pup’s teeth!
Finally, if your puppy is biting you to play, try making a high-pitched noise when they bite and stop all interaction. Move away for a short time and before returning to play. Repeat this every time your puppy bites and they will soon learn not to bite. This is valuable feedback for them to learn how to temper their bite when playing with you.
Hope you found this useful and good luck with your little one!
