Top dog walks around Yorkshire

While many of us take part in typical Yorkshire traditions daily, many have been planning how they can best celebrate Yorkshire Day differently this year (1st August 2022). With our gorgeous views and warm weather set for the rest of Summer, what could be better than a scenic dog walk?

Following a staggering 8,500% increase in interest for the search term ‘Yorkshire dog walks’ over the past month¹, we asked our Facebook audience what their favourite dog walks in Yorkshire were. From the responses, we’ve gathered eight splendid walks, and we delve into them below:  

1. Ogden Water Country Park

Ogden Water is a scenic nature reserve located in Halifax. The reserve has stunning lake views, a lovely landscape and several different exploring trails. If you’re taking your dog out for a walk or a hike, this walk is definitely for you! Over 300,000 people visit Ogden Water annually for picnics, dog walks, feeding the ducks and other nature activities. 

2. Brownhill and Ramsden Reservoir Walk

Located in Holmfirth, this circular walk is around three miles and is perfect for a family day out. You will see reservoir views, beautiful bridges and gorgeous woods, all areas that your pup will love to explore! A car park on Brownhill Lane is an ideal location to begin your circular stroll. If you’re looking to appreciate Yorkshire, what better than being right in the middle of the fantastic views?

3. Blackmoorfoot Reservoir 

This reservoir walk is located in Kirklees, West Yorkshire and is an easy walk with picturesque views that can be completed in less than an hour! If you want to head out on a family walk with your pooch, but don’t have much time, then this is the perfect route. It’s an entirely free walk which encompasses woodland alongside the water. 

4. Hardcastle Crags and Hebden Water Circular

Whether you’re heading out for a full family day or just want a quiet stroll with your pooch, this loop is 4km long and takes just under 90 minutes to complete on average. This trail is perfect for bird watching, hiking or camping, and dogs are welcome off the lead in certain areas of the route. You will walk alongside steep valley sides with woodland and a shallow river.

5. Huddersfield Narrow Canal

If a longer walk is what you’re after, the canal between Huddersfield and Marsden is an eight-mile stretch that provides you with a great view of the landscape and the wildlife. On this walk, you will pass through the villages of Milnsbridge, Slaithwaite, and Marsden before finally reaching Britain’s tallest, deepest and longest canal tunnel, Standedge Tunnel. A typically favourite section is Slaithwaite to Marsden, which is described as particularly picturesque. If you come through Slaithwaite, don’t forget to visit our natural dog food and treat shop!

6. Butterley Reservoir 

Butterley Reservoir is located in Kirklees and is a beautiful hillside walk with a view of the water. This area is known for dog walking, so you definitely won’t be out of place. The circular route is around 5k and is very accessible. The trail has a waterfowl, a canal, an active railroad causeway, and a great spot for fishing, although this is by permit only.

7. Colne Valley Circular Walk

Colne Valley is a circular walk through Kirklees, Yorkshire. This route takes you through Golcar, Linthwaite, Slaithwaite, and Marsden. You will get a walk down the canal, through the moors and views of Butterley Reservoir near Netherley. Although parts of this walk may be slightly more challenging than others, the views of the Colne Valley certainly make up for it!

8. Newmillerdam 

Newmillerdam Country Park is a favourite among our customers. It’s a 2.9k walk near Wakefield, West Yorkshire. This walk takes an average of 40 minutes and is perfect for cycling, hiking or bird watching. Dogs can be let off the lead in several parts of this trail as you can choose whether to walk on the path or through the woodland, tailoring your stroll to your dog’s desires!
