How often should I give my dog treats?

How many treats can I feed my dog during the day?

When it comes to giving your dog treats, obviously they should be incorporated into a balanced diet, but there are no set rules when it comes down to the amount of treats your dog can have.

Instead, what you want to do is consider a couple of factors including: age, breed of dog and what kind of treats you are feeding them.

If we compare dog breeds (and even dogs of the same breed), some will naturally be more prone to weight gain. This is down to various factors including levels of exercises for example. When giving treats to dogs that may be a little, ahem, chunkier, you would be better feeding treats that are low fat and are made from healthier ingredients like fruit and vegetables, whilst dogs with a lower body fat level would be fine to have treats that are maybe have higher levels of fats.

With any dog, you want to make sure the amount of treats you give your dog throughout the day is a sensible amount.

Do dog treats contain a lot of fat?

The brand and type of treats will dictate the fat content.  You can often find this out on the packaging (usually listed under oils or fats). Also remember that all fats were not created equal – healthy fats such as Omega 3 & 6 which is found in certain fish products, like sprats and fish skin thins, have brilliant health benefits.

Training Treats

When you are teaching your dog something new, it is great to reward them, but obviously you don’t want these treats to contain a large amount of fat as you will use quite a lot of them during training.  Our Just Meat Little Trainers are a fantastic option to use as a reward.  They are irresistible, 100% single protein and are suitable for any dog!

A lot of treats also contain fruit and vegetables which make a great healthier snack for your dog. Our Biscuit Bakes all contain fruit & vegetables. They are gluten and grain free and handmade in the UK!

In conclusion, as long as you are not over feeding your dog with treats and the treats you feed are suitable for your dog, then they are great to be incorporated into your dogs diet. Even dogs enjoy the odd guilty pleasure now and then!

Dolly and Reggie both enjoy our Fishcakes which come in three different mouth watering flavours and are low in fat! So make the perfect snack in between meals.

With Woofs and Wags,

Laura, Dolly & Reggie
